TitleSustainable processing of sewage sludge into garden soil
The Metsäpirtti composting plant in Sipoo plays a central role in sustainable waste utilisation in the Helsinki region. Here, sewage sludge from the regional sewage treatment plants and horse manure from neighbouring stables is processed into high-quality garden soil. The combination with peat and sand produces various types of soil and seedbeds, which are sold to horticultural and infrastructure companies as well as private customers.
TitleThe composting process
The entire composting process takes between seven and nine months. Firstly, the raw materials are mixed and piled into long stacks. In the summer months, when the plant is running at full capacity, these piles are turned monthly to speed up the composting process. The finished soil is then delivered to customers throughout southern Finland. At peak times, up to 40 lorry loads leave the plant every day.

The client for the project is HSY (Helsinki Region Environmental Services). The Metsäpirtti composting plant is located in Sipoo, Finland, and covers a total area of 17 hectares.
TitleOptimisation through Pointscene
Challenge Prior to the implementation of Pointscene, inventory monitoring on the site was carried out manually. This led to inadequate documentation and inefficient utilisation of the area.
Solution with Pointscene To improve the management and efficiency of the facility, Pointscene is used for various tasks:
- Overall overview: The software enables comprehensive monitoring of the situation on the compost site.
- Volume tracking: Compost pile volume calculations are now faster and more accurate.
- Invoicing: HSY can check contractor invoices based on the actual quantities processed, ensuring a high level of invoicing accuracy.
Thanks to the introduction of Pointscene, the management of the Metsäpirtti composting plant has become much more efficient and transparent.
