Laser scanning for iRacing

Laser scanning technology is applied in the PC world once again! For the racing game iRacing, the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course has been measured three-dimensionally by the iRacing laser scan team.

To record the race course digitally, a laser scanner with a field of vision of 360° by the company Leica was used. The laser beam hits the surface of different objects, is reflected there and detected by a sensor. Thereby, the geometry of objects can be recorded in detail and in 3D.

The advantage of this method for iRacing is that everything on the race course can be reconstructed in a digital 3D model and, then, the data can be used for the PC game. By laser scanning, the gaming environment gets more realistic! Modifications on the race course’s surface, like cracks, are recorded by the scanner – just as nuances in the grass, trees, hills, buildings and much more.

By means of 16 reference spheres, numerous scans could be easily joined together on the PC. Afterwards, the 3D model was modeled and applied for simulations. Now, gamers have the chance to get to know the course closely. They will be impressed by so many details.
