Documentation of piping

Is there a minimum diameter for piping so that piping can be scanned? How can you represent valves, handwheels etc.?

Survey piping by means of laser scanning

Hey Rene,

Principally, piping with a low diameter can be scanned, too. The details seen in the point cloud depends on the following factors:

1. Resolution of the laser scanner. The higher the resolution is, the more measurement points on the object are defined/surveyed by the laser scanner. When the resolution lasts out surveying the object, the object will also be visible in the scan. It is more difficult to determine the exact diameter of the piping. For that purpose, it is important to document the piping's diameter on site in order to place the pipe in the correct position by reference to the measurement points.

2. Distance to the object. Since the point density decreases when the distance to the scan object increases, piping with a lower diameter should be scanned at short range. In that case, teh following rule is applied: A lot of scans with an average resolution are better than a few scans with a high resolution.
Of course, you can represent handwheels, valves, check valves etc..

Kind regards
E. T.
