Google Tango Project - Scan the world with your mobile phone

With Google Tango Project, Google develops a phone that allows the user to capture objects and rooms straight with the mobile phone. The prototype already provides an incredible density of points due to 250 000 measured points and creates a whole 3D model of the reality.

In this article, you can see how a first model is scanned by the prototype of Google Tango project. Assuming that Google Tango Project gets ready for the market, everyone, who acquires a Foogpe Phone, would carry a camera-based "3D scanner" in his pocket. If you are thinking of other sensors (GPS, motion sensor, compass), which are built in the mobile phone, you can imagine to georeference the point cloud straight in Google Maps. Fantastic in some way. Fore sure, the accuracies will not touch the accuracies of current laser scanners, but noone will expect such precision. You find further information on the project on Google Tango Project site.

Google Tango Project is still in its infancy and programers around the world are invited to participate in the open-source program.
